After years of working in other industries including construction, Michael Hague found the rewarding career that he had been searching for with Bay & Basin Community Resources (BBCR).
Having always had an interest in disability and wanting to give back to his community, Michael took the first step in his career changing journey by enrolling in a TAFE Certificate in Disability and completing a work placement at BBCR.
Today, Michael has three certificates related to the sector and works a flexible week with BBCR dividing his time between both aged care and disability.
While Michael finds every day fulfilling, he especially enjoys the two days a week he provides NDIS funded, one-to-one support to 29-year-old Jesse Tough who has Down syndrome.
Michael and Jesse plan their time together around Jesse’s interests and goals and the life skills he needs now he has moved into his own supported living apartment.
A typical day for Jesse at BBCR might involve jamming with Michael on his electric guitar, cooking his own lunch on the BBQ, fishing at Island Point Jetty, using the power tools in the Activities Hub and working in the veggie patch.
“It has been really rewarding supporting Jesse and seeing him grow in confidence and independence,” Michael said.
“Jesse feels like one of the team when he comes to BBCR and I know he gets a lot of pride from working with the volunteers on projects that help others in our community.”
